WAVES OF LOVE
Commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, this work was premiered by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Jac Van Steen. Waves of Love received its Chinese premiere by the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra and was shortlisted for 4 prizes prior to its first performance. The work is featured on the BBC NOW's Digital Concert Platform.
THE HARP OF WALES
This tremolo study - performed and recorded by the composer - was commissioned by the National Library of Wales and released on NMC Recordings. The work itself is based on the gait of a speech given by David Lloyd George at the National Eisteddfod in Wales - a call in support of the power of music.
THOUSANDTH HYMNAL
THOUSANDTH HYMNAL was commissioned by the Tanglewood Music Center with the generous support of the Merwin Geffen M.D. and Norman Solomon M.D. New Commissions Fund. Conducted here by Armand Singh Birk, and recorded July 8, 2023 at Seiji Ozawa Hall. This piece went on to receive Grand Prize at the ISB David Walter 2024 Composition Competition.
PRACTICE PATIENCE
Practice Patience was commissioned by Psappha Ensemble as their inaugural Larner-Walker Commission. Recorded live at Hallé St Peter's in Manchester (UK) on 27th May 2021, this performance is conducted by Jamie Phillips. Practice Patience was the first piece of David's to be performed after the COVID lockdown - an emotional time.
SENTIMENTAL ESPIONAGE MUSIC
Performed here by the wonderful Pennsylvania Wind Quintet, Sentimental Espionage Music was written as part of Britten Sinfonia's Magnum Opus Residency - premiered in Milton Court, London. The Arts Desk praised Sentimental Espionage Music for its "ingenious scoring".
THE WAVES I RIDE HAVE NEVER YET BEEN CROSSED
Performed by La Filharmonie and Camerata Strumentale "Città di Prato", conducted by Nima Keshavarzi, this piece was premiered in Italy, is published by Edizioni Curci, and won First Prize at the Dante 700 Orchestral Composition Competition.
LOVE AND ADMIRATION
Commissioned by the world's first Professor of Ukulele, Giovanni Albini. This movement - taken from I LOVE UKULELE - explores the tight technicality of the ukulele by guiding the performer through a series of twisting, lilting harmonies.
A PRAYER AT THE EDGE OF SILENCE
Check out this interview about David's string quartet, A Prayer at the Edge of Silence, commissioned by the incredible Solem Quartet, this work was toured across the UK (including Wooler Arts Festival and Buxton International Festival) and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 In Tune, with the concert series receiving social media love from Yoko Ono.
IN EVERY HEART
Written for Samatha Muir, this is an intense and expressive tremolo study for ukulele - loosely based on the opening of the Billy Joel song "And So It Goes" from his Storm Front. If you're a skeptic, then listen to the end, it's hard to deny Muir's interpretive and technical skill.
HEARTBREAK
This beautiful performance of HEARTBREAK - written for Oscar Whight and Zeynep Özscura - received positive reviews from Gramophone, British Music Society, the International Trumpet Guild (calling it a "Must have" recording).
THE HAMMER OF ACCEPTANCE / THE OUTRAGE OF REPETITION
Commissioned by the National Youth Guitar Ensemble and Tŷ Cerdd, and premiered at the Dora Stoutzker Hall at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama by NYGE fellows, this piece draws on rock and metal to make a fun, powerful piece of music. This work was also tourned by NYGE in 2025.
SUMMER CLASSIC
Performed by the American Modern Ensemble, this work was completed as part of a Full Fellowship for the Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs, this recording was made at the Arthur Zankel Music Center.
ACOUSTICAL ANATOMY
Commissioned by Dyson and the Orion Orchestra, this work was televised and broadcast internationally to millions of people. With multi-page coverage in The London Evening Standard and a a full magazine dedicated to all of the custom-built instruments through Dyson's in-house media publication, this was one of David's first substantial orchestra commissions.
HARM REDUCTION
In this interview, David talks about his work Harm Reduction - a commission from Uproar Ensemble, toured around Wales in early 2025. The work received a five star review in The Arts Desk, being described as "irresistible" and "glorious".
FOR ALEX
Performed by Welsh guitarist Gerard Cousins and released on the Prima Classica label, this work has received over 300,000 streams, international playlist placement, and international radio play. The work was originally written for David's wife - 10 years after its composition, they would walk down the aisle together to this piece at their wedding.
